Range Hoods: Why Kitchen Ventilation Matters
A Cleaner, Safer Kitchen with Hauslane
Our kitchen gets a ton of use
My dad's been cooking Chinese food for over 50 years, as a professional chef and restaurant owner, and also as a loving father.
Between daily personal cooking and cooking on camera for our recipe videos, it's fair to say that our kitchen is well-used.
With all the deep-frying, steaming, and stir-frying that happens in there, a lot of stuff ends up in the air. Stuff as in fumes, and grease, and odors. Now, the lingering odor of dinner is a relatively innocuous problem, but fumes are actually a health hazard. You really don't want smoky, greasy fumes floating around an unventilated kitchen and into your lungs.
You need a quality range hood
Your kitchen needs to be equipped with a quality range hood that captures these fumes and odors. Especially whenever you’re stir-frying or frying foods at home, you’ll want to turn up your ventilation to the highest setting, because a powerful range hood is like an invisible shield that protects the family from fumes that can be harmful to our health. Your vents and filters will start getting filthy and need regular cleaning, yes, but that’s because it’s catching everything that could be getting into your lungs and home.
Are kitchen fumes that bad?
When you cook, you're releasing pollutants, irritants, gas fumes such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, and more. Some of them aren’t visible, but sometimes they’re as obvious as your cooking oil starting to smoke. If that sounds familiar after watching our videos, it’s because we often emphasize choosing the right cooking oils, with smoke points being a huge factor in that.
Smoking oil isn't always a problem and is sometimes even desired for getting that perfect “wok hei” in your stir fry, but it's a sign that the oil is breaking down which can release burnt or bitter flavors, or even harmful free radicals.
We have to choose oils with higher smoke points if we’re planning to really heat them up, like for super quick, super hot stir-fries. But even the wisest oil selection will produce fumes and residue. So, yes, it’s important to ventilate your kitchen properly with a quality range hood!
Meet Hauslane
Luckily, we've met some awesome people whose goal is to bring you affordable, restaurant-grade range hoods. That is, Calvin and his team at Hauslane! They're an Asian-owned kitchen improvement business that's located in San Francisco, and they’ve been so supportive of us.
We share similar backstories of working at and owning Chinese restaurants, and identical memories of mealtimes being vital to our families. While Made With Lau went into preserving and sharing our family recipes, Hauslane went into kitchen improvements. With their support, you and your family can enjoy cooking in an inspiring, safe environment for years and years.
What’s special about Hauslane’s range hoods?
I helped set this up for my parents and Hauslane made it super easy with their live consultation service. Then we really put it to the test, frying and stir-frying and steaming away. For our Orange Chicken recipe, we deep-fried chicken, stir-fried a fragrant sauce, and our kitchen smelled like... absolutely nothing! True seals of approval from the Lau family!
They thought of EVERYTHING.
From online interactions to packaging to installation, they thought of it all.
The website was accessible and walked us through the various options that were available to us.
The UC-PS18 comes available in 3 Colors (silver, matte black, matte white) with easily changeable GU10 LED Lights. They had videos that we could watch to show us the product and an instructional video on how to install it on our own.
Thankfully, it was also designed to have a simple installation process that had adaptions to fit most kitchen vent openings, so it was a quick switch from our old one.
Powerful ventilation
On Hauslane's website, they introduce the UC-PS18 as "bringing professional-quality range hoods to your home with our Chef Series UC-PS18 under-cabinet kitchen range hood. Backed by dual motors, this range hood is designed to make extracting odors, fumes, and chemicals from your kitchen a breeze. Plus, our UC-PS18 under-cabinet kitchen range hood comes with a unique, versatile venting system designed to fit most ducts and save you time and money."
They weren't kidding! The strong suction really pulled in the odors and fumes as we were cooking. One of our favorite functions is the delayed auto-shutoff function where we can set the time when we want the fan to turn off. It’s a great way to get the last of the fumes. We were amazed that after filming, there wasn't a prominent smell of fried food or that sense of thick, greasy air after a long day of cooking.
It’s very easy to clean!
With their sleek button design and dishwasher-safe baffle filters, cleaning the range hood was a breeze. We just did a quick wipe down and popped the baffle filters into the dishwasher once we finished filming. It really cut down our cleaning time and we are so excited to have professional kitchen equipment at home at such an affordable price!
Thanks again to Hauslane for sponsoring our Orange Chicken video and for saving us so much clean-up work after cooking and filming. We can really see how Calvin and his team at Hauslane are so passionate about giving everyone the best cooking and kitchen experience.
